Flint sits on the southern bank of the Dee estuary, roughly in the middle of the Flintshire coast, and holds the oldest town charter in Wales, granted in 1284. The ruins of its Edwardian castle still stand by the water. After Courtaulds closed in the late 1980s, the cleared land made way for business and retail parks, and together with the Manor Industrial Park these make Flint one of the county's main industrial centres, home to manufacturers including Kimberley-Clark alongside many smaller firms.
